He started in the absence of Gary Cahill in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham and now the season is over, what do you think will happen to Nathan Ake this summer?
It's a question that needs to be answered as with so many other players who have spent more than enough time out on loan in recent seasons. However, Nathan Ake has gained valuable Premier League experience in the last two years with Watford and Bournemouth and as he states, at his age he wants to play a little bit more. When asked of his lack of involvement this season since returning from Bournemouth he said:
“I know what you mean, because when I was 17, 18, 19, you are happy you are going to be involved, or be on the bench, or get some minutes. But I think at my age now, you want to play a little bit more, also because I had a taste of it. Of course you also know this is a big club, so there will be big players and it’s not easy to come into the team. I just need to see what is going to happen with Michael [Emenalo, the technical director] or the manager. We have to talk and see what is best.
People always say: ‘You should talk to the manager, you deserve to play.’ I’m not really like that. I’m more like, if they want me to play, then they should play me. Sometimes of course you will ask: ‘What can I do?’ There was a time with Mourinho when I wasn’t playing and I just went to his office and asked what I could do to make his mind up a bit more about me, so he might give me a game. But I won’t come in and say: ‘I need to play.’
The main thing for me is to play games. Whether it is here, whether it is somewhere else, I don’t know yet. I need to see what Michael thinks. That’s what we need to discuss and see where we go from there.” - Source: The Guardian.
One thing is certain, Chelsea ARE in the market for defenders to replace John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic who have both left the club. It's going to be more than interesting to see what happens with Antonio Conte and the Chelsea board. I wonder if they are going to spend the reported £200m they will make available or if someone like Ake will be given the chance to get into the squad with just one additional centre-back being recruited and not two that most people feel Chelsea are looking to sign.
He has already proven that he can cope with the demands of our league and if you think back to the FA Cup semi-final, he more than coped being thrown in at the deep end.
Is it time to give him more of a chance at Chelsea or will we see him loaned out to a side in the Premier League again?
I'd like to see Ake given a chance; he's potentially better than those we have at present with the exception of Azpilicueta.
ReplyDeleteI'm more troubled by his comments about talking to either "Michael or the manager" and seeing what "Michael has to say". It would seem that Emanalo still has a free hand to interfere with with the daily management. I wonder how long before we have a "palpable discord" between Conte and some players?
