John Terry has revealed this week that he would be "surprised" if Chelsea do not six five or six big players this summer as we prepare for life being back in the Champions League.
As with any season, there will be players leaving the club and players coming in to the club as that's part and parcel of football. At Chelsea we have seen some transfer windows that have felt as though they were much more important than others and this summer for me feels the same. This is massive for Antonio Conte, Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board to get the right deals done and quickly.
So to JT and I wanted to refer back to the quote he gave after his final game at Stamford Bridge against Sunderland. When asked of potential signings he responded by saying:
"With the Champions League and the number of games we’re going to play, I think we really need to strengthen in the transfer window.
I’m sure the owner will sit down with the manager and discuss that.
I’d be surprised if there were not at least five or six big players coming in the summer." - Source: Goal.com.
As we know, player such as Oscar, Mikel, Branislav Ivanovic, Christian Atsu, Patrick Bamford and Juan Cuadrado have all left the club for a transfer fee with Oscar's move to China being huge so there is plenty of money to spend. If you add the reported £155m Chelsea have received this year from prize money for winning the Premier League, TV rights and other deals, then you would imagine we have around £250m to re-invest in the squad.
I certainly do not for see Chelsea looking to spend that amount of money but with our top six rivals all looking to spend big this summer, this will be a record year for spending that could blow any previous records out of the water - with Chelsea being a big, big part of that.
As for six players coming in? We defiantly need to strengthen at the back with another centre-back, two more wing-backs, an attacking midfielder and another striker. Listen, if there is anyone who would know then you would have to imagine it's JT.
Could this be huge for Chelsea in the coming weeks? Let's hope so!
