Nemanja Matic is back to his best this season and has found the same consistency he had when we won the Premier League title two years ago. He remains a vital part of our Chelsea team.
Think back to near the end of last season and our victory at Bournemouth. On that day, Matic popped up with a goal but refused to celebrate giving an insight to how unhappy he appeared to be at Chelsea so it looked at the time that he would be looking to leave in the summer.
If reports back in the summer are true, Antonio Conte stepped in and persuaded Matic to stay at Chelsea despite interest from Juventus who had identified the big Serbian midfielder as the man to replace Paul Pogba. It has turned out to be an excellent decision.
Playing alongside N'Golo Kante, Matic has rediscovered his form knowing that he has someone next to him that is prepared to run all over the pitch and someone who is prepared to tackle in the heart of our midfield.
Players such as Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, David Luiz and N'Golo Kante himself receive all the plaudits but you have to agree that Matic has been just as consistent. It seems that Matic is unhappy at the lack of recognition he receives for his performances as explained here when asked of this season. He said:
"I am very happy because everything has gone well since what happened last season.
As you can see, we are playing good, we are first in the table and this is the most important thing now.
I don't know if this is my best form for Chelsea, but I always try to give everything for the team.
I have been doing that since the first day that I came here, sometimes I'm better, sometimes it's not enough.
But I'm very happy when the team is winning the games and when the team is playing well. I'm happy to be a part of this." - Source: London Evening Standard.
People talk (rightly so) of how effective N'Golo Kante is but imagine the Chelsea midfield without Matic and we would have a problem. Think of the ground he covers, the tackles he wins and his ability with the ball at his feet.
I think he is right, he doesn't receive the credit or the recognition he deserves because this season, as with many others, he has been outstanding once again.
