Chelsea's woeful title defence last season had gone down in history as the worst on record (before Leicester this year). Thibaut Courtois has offered a laughable explanation for it.
Blogs such as this one should be focusing on this season and the excellent work both the Manager and the Players are doing so far, to that I agree 100% however, it's the explanation that Thibaut Courtois has given that has caught my attention. If anything, it's frustratingly very honest.
He said:
"Last season, we started a little bit too relaxed. We thought, 'Last season we were champions easily, this year we can take it easy.' We dropped points in the Premier League, we started to lose, and we couldn't get out of that. There was a bit of a negative atmosphere, which meant things didn't go well." - Source: ESPN.
As I said it's frustratingly very honest isn't it. I will never, ever understand how, despite what Courtois has admitted there, a team can go out and not show any fight or any pride for two-thirds of the season?
The only positive we can take from the whole situation is the fact that Antonio Conte was hired to come in and sort the shit in the dressing room out. He comes across as a strict disciplinarian which is exactly what the squad needed and has proven this of late with the whole "reported" Diego Costa situation.
One thing is for sure, there is no sign of any repeat mentality this year and Antonio Conte will not settle for anything less than hard work while he remains at Chelsea.
To think it would be easy! What a load of bollocks!
