According to various reports, Antonio Conte has identified Dimitri Payet of West Ham as someone who would improve his squad and is preparing a bid of around £40m this month. I'm wondering if the Chelsea fans agree?
First and foremost, it appears that the player himself has his heart set on a move back to Marseille for personal reasons and reports this morning in the media have confirmed that he has agree personal terms with the French club.
However, as we have seen this week, Slaven Bilic is in no mood to do business with Marseille and revealed as such in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekends games and revealed that the player has refused to play for West Ham again (one report this morning claims that he would even feign injury to not play which is scandalous).
So what of Chelsea's "reported" interest in Payet? Is there any real substance in these reports? Personally, I think it's a total waste of time and complete fabrication. During any transfer window you need to be careful of where you read these reports and the sources they come from. We all know which media outlets are trusted and which of those write headlines to sell copy or gain page views.
In addition, if Payet does want to leave then we have to turn our attention to his agent and the fact that he would be working overtime to try and secure the player a move. It comes as no surprise that someone other than Marseille are now being linked with him but think about it for a second, West Ham would not want to lose him to another Premier League club would they? If the player forced a move away and is acting the way he is which right now seems to be a disruptive influence around the club then West Ham would have little option but to sell him back to France.
As for Payet improving our options at Chelsea within our current first team? I disagree. He has obvious talent and ability but for me he doesn't work hard enough without the ball.. If anything, he needs to be much more of an influence in games on a consistent basis and to not drift out of games as easily as he does.
If I was West Ham right now I would focus on Lanzini being your play maker and sell Payet as quickly as possible. No player is bigger than the club and what is it about the French and kicking off at clubs if they do not get their own way (Gallas!)?
