Ten games into the season and sitting just a point behind the league leaders, Sol Campbell has backed Chelsea to win the Premier League!
In my opinion it is far too early to make any sort of predictions with plenty to consider between now and the end of the season. With twenty-eight games to go, the busy Christmas period, injuries & suspensions and the fact that on any given day the best teams on paper can lose to sides sitting at the bottom of the league, literally anything can happen between now and the end of the season.
So to Sol Campbell and his opinion on the revitalised Chelsea under Antonio Conte. Having won four games in a row, having kept four clean sheets while scoring eleven goals, Chelsea are now right back in the title race.
When asked of Chelsea’s latest performance against Southampton and our recent run, including the 4-0 thumping of Manchester United, he said:
"It’s very professional. Tight at the back, that’s key.
Look at Leicester - how they won the Premier League last year, very tight at the back, nicking goals.
They are not just nicking goals, Chelsea, they are dispatching teams as well. But being tight at the back.
And that’s the right balance. The right cocktail, if you need that solid [defence], in those tight games, back end of the season, last day, six, seven, eight games, that will kick in and make the difference." – Source: London Evening Standard.
I have to agree with the ex-Arsenal defender, if you are to be successful you need to keep things tight at the back and to not concede too many goals, which as we all know was exactly what was happening at the beginning of the season.
Think back to Chelsea’s title win back in the 2004/5 Premier League season, look at how impressive we were at the back and just how many goals we actually conceded in the whole of the season (15) and it’s a remarkable record.
Looking at the four games we have played so far with our new tactical system which has been analysed on SkySports Monday Night Football as below, the players seem really comfortable with it and we look like a solid side once again.
If we can keep things as tight as possible at the back and through midfield when we do not have the ball, we can really hurt teams when we have the ball in our possession with the likes of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa being a constant threat to anyone they face.
It is far too early to make predictions but according to one Premier League defensive stalwart of a certain generation, Chelsea are looking good if they can keep it together!
