With reports this past summer that PSG were more than interested in his services, Willian has distanced himself from any possible move away from Chelsea and has expressed a willingness to extend his contract to finish his career here.
That is fantastic news in my opinion as if you look at his performances overall for the club since he arrived, he has been outstanding. He played a major role in our title win two seasons ago and whilst everyone else seemed to suffer, literally carried his teammates through last season deservedly winning the Player of the Year award.
However, towards the end of last year and at times so far this year, Willian has been average to say the least and he must improve his consistency to the levels of that title win again.
This year for Willian, and the same can be said of plenty of others at Chelsea, could turn into a real challenge to maintain their regular selection under Antonio Conte. We have to be honest to admit that the likes of Willian and Eden Hazard knew that if fit they would start week in, week out and that isn’t good. Chelsea needed players to challenge both of them for their places and it never happened.
This year, with the evident switch to three at the back adopting two wing backs, Willian could be forced to switch inside and fight for the regular start behind the Striker with the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Cesc Fabregas. He has little choice but to adjust to the demands from the Manager and has been forced to up his game because if he does not perform, the Manager is not afraid of either substituting him in games or to drop him to the bench.
Speaking of the link to PSG back in the Summer and his commitment to Chelsea, Willian said:
‘I read some things in the press on this topic but personally, I never received a concrete offer from PSG.
My family feels good in London and I love the Premier League, which is the best in the world.
I am growing in a team that plays beautiful football, something which is important in my eyes. For all of these reasons, I intend to see out my contract and perhaps even extend it a little further if the club offers me the chance.
It would be a privilege to finish my career at a club as big as Chelsea.' Source: Daily Mail.
Chelsea fans continue to look to the likes of Willian to be the difference as he was last year but this time around in a side that is challenging for trophies. Chelsea need their best players to make their mark if they are to challenge and on his day, Willian can be a match winner.
