Marcos Alonso is a name that not many of us would of had linked with a move to Stamford Bridge throughout the summer right up to last week. However, the £23m signing could turn out to be an excellent addition to our squad.
The majority of Chelsea fans out there would tell you that as a full back, Branislav Ivanovic has had his day and it's time for someone else to step into that role, to make it their own. I personally had hoped that Ola Aina would be given the chance down the left hand side after being given plenty of game time in pre-season and against Bristol Rovers, but it appears that it was not mean't to be.
So, after weeks of trying to negotiate deals, with Conte and Chelsea talking/working every day they may have just stumbled upon not only an excellent signing, but someone who could lure Antonio Conte into a tactical change that could become the system for Chelsea under Conte (More on that later).
People will talk of his previous spells in England but I wouldn't take too much notice of that. It's at Fiorentina where, given the chance and a regular run of games, he has really flourished and developed into the player we now have at Stamford Bridge.
He spoke of the move and said:
“I’m very happy: it’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles. It was an easy decision for me to make when I heard the club were interested in signing me. My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamed about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I’m looking forward to working with my new team-mates.”
A tall, leggy Defender, with good use of the ball and technical ability, he could easily force his way into the team at left-back with Cesar Azpilicueta back over on the right hand side to give Conte a more dynamic approach.
Alonso can also play as a centre-back or as a centre midfielder. Take a look of the Video of his highlights from last season put together by Scout Nation and see what you think. I personally think he is a great signing and an excellent addition.
