As we know Chelsea splashed out a cool £57m on transfer deadline day on Marcos Alonso and David Luiz and I just wonder if this is a signal of intent from Antonio Conte to switch to playing three centre-backs at Chelsea this season?
We know that it is his favoured formation but up to this point, we didn't have the strength in numbers to adopt to that style. Now we know what David Luiz offers us in that area but Marcos Alonso can also play as a centre-back which gives us yet another option for Conte.
The Manager now has the opportunity to mix things up knowing that he has FIVE players that can play in the middle: John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz and Marcos Alonso. Even if you take Alonso out of the equation, we still have four options to choose from which is much better than we had last season.
I understand that plenty of people will talk of Luiz coming in as a replacement for John Terry but for this season anyway, I wouldn't be so sure. How about Luiz playing as a left-sided centre-back, JT through the middle and Gary Cahill on the right side of a back three? Do you think it would work?
It's clear that the Manager demanded to have options available to him in the form of players and options tactically to work on. Now he has that and I wonder where the next few months will take us.
What do you people think of a possible switch to three at the back? Do you think it would work or would you still with the tried and trusted four?
Would love to hear your thoughts!
