Antonio Conte is a frustrated man at the moment as our search for re-enforcements seems to have stalled. He indicated yesterday in his press conference that we may have to settle for players that are not first choice instead!
Chelsea have been linked with a number of defensive targets over the course of the summer and into the new season but as yet, we have not been able to land any of them, which if you think about it is the same as last season. What happened last season, we end up signing players to come in and make up the numbers in the squad who hardly ever feature for us which to me is a pointless exercise!!
So to Antonio Conte and his reaction to being asked of defensive targets. He said:
“I must be honest, I think we’ll have a problem to reach our [transfer] targets. I still hope with this transfer market to improve the squad and the team with some new players, but we understand our targets are very difficult to reach. But we have a game against Burnley for now which is more important than the transfer market. Then, after that, I hope [moves are made to secure] some more players than now before the deadline.”
According to various reports, Chelsea had bids rejected for Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli by Napoli and AC Milan respectively. However, Napoli have just signed a new defender within the last couple of days and we hope to see Chelsea look to secure the signing of Conte's primary defensive option in Koulibaly. Whether that happens or not will be interesting to see but there is obviously some sort of disconnect here and that is worrying for me.
It's only natural for the club to look at our squad and see 90-95% of the player that won the Premier League & League Cup two seasons still here and think that nothing much needs changing. Everyone outside of the Boardroom can see that we needed at least four or five players this summer after the debacle of last season. We have two so far but still need another Striker and TWO defenders in my opinion.
Two summers ago the club acted swiftly in the transfer market, got their deals completed early with no messing about and we had a successful season. We simply cannot afford the complete opposite to happen for the second summer running now!
What do you people think of all this for the second year running? Are you as frustrated as Conte? Will you be happy to accept second rate squad players being signed just to bulk our numbers or rather wait until January to sign players that will come into the squad and immediately challenge for a regular starting spot?
Come on Chelsea, sort this shit out!
