It's the 1st July and the summer transfer window is open and player contracts have expired. With that Chelsea have announced that Marco Amelia, Alexandre Pato and Radamel Falcao have all left the club - What a waste of every ones time that was!
As we all know Amelia was brought in as cover in Goal with Thibaut Courtois injured and out for a few months, so he provided backup to Azmir Begovic and never featured. You can understand that he has been released. But what about the other two?
We have two Strikers who were keen to rebuild their reputations in European Football, both itching for a chance to prove themselves and both were never given that opportunity which is something I can not get my head around at all. Why on earth go through all that time and effort to bring them here if you have no intention of playing them?
Alexandre Pato was someone who I really admired back in the day at AC Milan, a couple of really good seasons came to an end with serious injury and he went back to Brazil. It was there that he rebuilt his career and has proven that he still has what it takes to make a difference in any league in the world in my opinion. Form is temporary, class is permanent and make no mistake Pato is class.
Look at the one and only performance at Aston Villa. Coming into the game as an early substitute, he made his mark with an outstanding display. Scoring one and involved in two of our other goals, he showed glimpses of what he is still capable of. It was his link up play with everyone else that impressed me and he showed a level of understanding with the players at such an early stage that could have really benefited Chelsea through until the end of the season.
However, for some reason, Guus Hiddink wasn't having him or his playing style and he spent 99% of his loan spell sitting on our bench with the most activity in Chelsea gear spent up and down the sideline warming up for literally nothing.
Radamel Falco is a different situation altogether but similar in that all he wants is a chance to prove himself on a regular basis. Granted, I realise that Diego Costa is always going to be our first choice last season but when this guy was fit, why didn't we use him?
The one goal Falcao scored for us demonstrated that his instinct remains intact and his natural ability to find the net. A diving header at the near post from literally nothing was excellent and I had hoped that he really kicked on from there but it was never meant to be.
I can't help but think that we have seriously missed a trick with Falcao because when he is fully fit and playing regularly, he will score goals for fun once again and get back to somewhere near the player he used to be.
I really cannot help but think that this whole process was a total waste of time for everyone. For the club for having to go through all the drama of signing them. For the players themselves and for us the supporters.
Let's hope we do not make the same mistakes again!
