Cesar Azpilicueta is one name I never thought Chelsea could literally do without after his stellar performances at the club since he was signed. Now, he is being linked with a move away for as little as £13.8m this summer!
Quoted by Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville not so long ago as the best one-on-one defender in the Premier League, I cannot seriously believe that we are even considering letting him go. The reason? Apparently Antonio Conte doesn't fancy him as a possible wing back and is looking to other players to come in and do a better job!
You can now imagine the long list of big names within European football who would be keen to secure his services for such a ridiculous price. The likes of Atletico, PSG, Bilbao are all interested but reports believe that Barcelona, Bayern Munich and wait for it - Manchester United under Jose Mourinho are all in the running for his signature with Barcelona being labelled as favourites with the Dani Alves rumoured to be leaving (if he hasn't done so already). Luis Enrique had planned to sign Hector Bellerin from Arsenal but with that deal dead in the water he has turned his attention to the Azpilicueta.
I am not surprised when it comes to Jose because he has sung "Dave's" praises when Manager here by openly admitting that he wished he had a team of "11 Cesar Azpilicueta's!".
I personally cannot for the life of me understand why we would want rid of him when it was obvious that he IS and WAS our only decent fullback last season. He can do a job down both flanks and is one of the best there is in his position. Let's also not forget that it was down to his adaptability to make the switch under Mourinho from right back to left back, then his subsequent performances and that saw the end of Ashley Cole here.
You think of the inflated prices these days within Europe for defenders that are not even on a par with him or at the same level. It baffles me how we can be willing to sell for just £13.8m!
I sincerely hope that he stays at Chelsea but if Conte's wants to bring in his own players in those positions it just something we are going to have to accept. The fact that Italy face Spain in the next round of Euro2016 - Euro 2016 odds by William Hill online - will be interesting to see just how well he plays if named in the starting eleven with a chance to show the new boss what he can do!
What do you think of the reports and of the price quoted? Do you think he could do a job for Conte here instead?
