According to various sources late last night, Real Madrid are about to tempt Antonio Conte and Chelsea with a mouth-watering offer of Alvaro Morata PLUS £35m for Eden Hazard! I wonder if YOU would turn it down or entertain it?
The big question we all have as Chelsea fans what formation and tactical shape Antonio Conte will decide to adopt at Chelsea when he eventually starts his job as Manager after Euro 2016. Once we have an indication of what he wants to do, we will have much more of an idea as to who's position at the club is under threat.
Let me explain. Look at Italy in Euro 2016. They play with no natural wingers as they utilise wing-backs. The three central midfielders have their own individual jobs to do with some having licence to push forward and support the two strikers up front while the other sits in a defensive position.
If Conte was adopt this approach at Chelsea next season then you would look at our wide players as being dispensable and that includes Eden Hazard. The job out wide is covered by marauding wing backs who work their socks off up and down those flanks so there is little call for natural wingers in this formation.
You would rely on the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Oscar, Willian, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Matic (for the time being) to fight for those three positions in the midfield and not anyone else. If that was the case, then I could see Chelsea possibly entertaining the idea of cash plus a player that has become a well known target in Alvaro Morata.
As much as we love Eden Hazard when he is on form and the fact that as soon as he picks up the ball we are up off our seats waiting for a moment of inspiration, a moment of magic that can change a game. No one person is more important than the team and it's teamwork under Conte that will take us back into the top four next season.
If that is the case, I would take that deal to bring Morata here and the addition money that covers the signing of Michy Batshuayi that is about to be announced.
On the flip side, everyone knows that we need to keep our best players here if we are to have a realistic chance of getting back into the Champions League, which is what Conte has been tasked with this coming season, with Eden Hazard being the best we have without question.
Is he that good, as he was the other night against Hungary, that Conte will decide to build a team in a formation that will suit Hazard in order to utilise his strengths to get the best out of him? Would Antonio Conte look to deploy Hazard as a winger, give him a free role or utilise him as the player wants himself as a number ten?
Everything is uncertain at this stage until he starts his job here. The continued speculation is bound to intensify over the coming days and weeks so we will just have to wait and see what happens.
One thing I will say is that it's clear that Conte wants Morata and Chelsea HAVE opened talks with Real Madrid over a possible move. Reports have stated over recent weeks that he wants to adopt a system with two strikers and was always looking to bolster that area with Morata already proving just how good he could be after a successful few years at Juventus.
What would you do if there is substance in these reports and Real Madrid come in with this offer for Hazard? Would you want to hold onto him and turn it down, or would you accept, take the cash plus one of Europe's hottest properties?
Only time will tell.
