Chelsea have been linked with a move to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge for months now. Reports stating that Everton would want around £65m to let him go, I am wondering whether or not you think it's worth it? For me it isn't.
Yes we all know that Lukaku has proven himself in the Premier League by scoring goals on a regular basis and for that reason I can understand Antonio Conte's reported interest however, it's the other areas of his game that are lacking that concern me.
You look at the size of the man and his physical frame and believe that he could be so much more. Think of the size of Didier Drogba compared to Romelu Lukaku and you will be able to understand what I am talking about.
Drogba had a smaller, slender frame than Lukaku but just look at how he bossed his direct opponents. He was all about physical power, strength and became the perfect target man for us. Everything we looked to do revolved around him whether we played the ball into the channel between the central defender and full back, hit the ball over the top for him to use his pace to run onto it, played the ball up to him to win the header with people making runs off of his expected flick or simply to play the ball up to him so he could hold off the defender, get the ball under control and bring others into play. I simply do not see that as Lukaku.
Lukaku doesn't do anywhere near enough up top for someone of his physique. He hardly wins the ball in the air which is something I really struggle to understand. Just look at how many times in the Premier League the ball goes up to him and comes straight back! Last night for example up against two Swedish defenders who are by no means world class, whenever it went up to him in the air it virtually always came straight back again. When Benteke replaced him late on you could see a marked difference. The very first time the ball came up to him in the air he won it and flicked it on to Mertens to start another Belgian attack.
Some people would say that for all the goals he scores he should be seen as an investment to which I do understand providing he makes dramatic improvements to his game as discussed. What happens if he doesn't though?
In my eyes if Benteke is available (and you would have to believe he would cost significantly less than Lukaku) I would prefer to sign him based on what he offers up top in ALL possible situations as Didier Drogba. In fact, Benteke is the closet you will find as a comparison to the Legend!
What do you think here? Do you think the fact that he scores plenty is enough to pay that amount of money or do you agree with me?
