Yesterday 14th June marked fifteen years to the day that Claudio Ranieri spent the best £11m Chelsea EVER spent when he signed Frank Lampard from West Ham. Thirteen years and 211 goals later, Frank Lampard will always be remembered as a Legend.
Many people at the time were wondering who would replace Gus Poyet who had come to prominence as a goal scoring midfielder at Chelsea. It was the fact that he was always a danger, a threat and someone who put himself into scoring positions from midfield that had impressed all of us. When someone like that leaves the club, you wonder who could replace them and have the same influence that we had gotten used to.
When Frank Lampard signed it was clear that he was far from the finished article but someone with an obvious talent and desire to succeed. In the three seasons he played for the club under Ranieri and surrounded by world class players such as Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly, Emmanuel Petit and Claude Makelele, Lampard's game really kicked on.
In the 2003/4 season, Ranieri's last as Manager and with the influx of expensive signings as Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, Lampard discovered his goalscoring touch and netted fifteen times that season.
Jose Mourinho came to the club in the summer of 2004 and Lampard had finally found his feet and became a major influence on our football team. He developed every aspect of his game and that included his goal return for the next NINE seasons notching double figures including scoring twenty or more goals for the next five years in a row. His best goal scoring season at the club being in the Double winning team under Carlo Ancelotti as he scored a massive twenty-seven goals in fifty-one appearances.
Frank Lampard was one of our most consistent performers and prominent players throughout the most successful period in the history of our football club and is rightly remembered here as a legend.
No one can ever replace him and I believe that the Premier League will never ever see the likes of a goal scoring Midfielder such as him again.
Forget the hassle he gets now over in the MLS, they simply do not understand what a player he was for us. When he eventually hangs up his boots people will be forced to sit down and take stock of his playing career looking at what he has achieved at this club.
Champions League,Europa League, numerous Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup titles Frank has won it all with Munich being his crowning glory.
I re-iterate my point. There will never be anyone that comes close to his goal scoring record from midfield ever again.
Quite simply, the best £11m Chelsea ever spent!
