Everyone has been impressed with the performances of Antonio Conte's team at Euro 2016. A team that is a proper team, working hard for each other from the solid base that is three centre backs. Is this something you think he would implement at Chelsea next season?
The obvious problem he will have is that we haven't played this way before and most importantly of all, the players haven't worked on that combination at all since they have been at the club. If anything, the Italians are reaping the rewards of the Goalkeeper and back three all emanating from Juventus where they play with each other, in the same formation/combinations week in, week out.
It's something that takes time to implement, time to learn and to adapt and with our pre season starting soon, it's not enough time to work with ahead of the new season unless worked on every single day. Let's also not forget that Kurt Zouma is out injured for a while which leaves Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry and Gary Cahill as the obvious choices to fill the roles of Barzahli, Bonucci and Cheillini. Matt Miazga would be our backup at this stage.
JT would play in the middle with the others either side and that could be why Conte was reportedly so insistent that Chelsea handed him a new one-year deal. From that position, he can see what is happening around him and play almost as a sweeper.
However, as we know, most sides in the Premier League play with a single striker up front now with just the odd couple playing two up front. Is that going to cause us too much of a problem with three at the back?
It's an interesting system and if you can get it working as Conte has with Italy, it's very impressive. Italy have looked rock solid for the most part in the competition so far and up against Germany it will be interesting to see how the World Champions approach their tactics for the game.
There is so many elements to making it work from the centre backs and their positions, the wing backs, the three hard working midfielders and two strikers up top. I guess we need to ask ourselves the question whether or not we believe we have the players to do so?
I have said it on here previously, until Conte starts his job full time, no one will know what his intentions are and it's going to take the whole of pre-season to get some sort of an idea due to the amount of games we are due to play. In fact, you would be better off looking to see what are the best online casinos today than to try and second guess what will happen.
One thing is for sure, Antonio Conte will work his arse off and fight tooth and nail to make whatever tactical system he adopts work. I have a really good feeling about this appointment and it couldn't come at a better time.
What do you think of the three centre defender approach in the Premier League? Can it work for Conte at Chelsea as it has for him with Italy?
