Marco Van Ginkel is a Chelsea player that looks almost certain to leave this summer but looks like being made to wait by new boss Antonio Conte until after the Euros. Having scored eight times in thirteen appearances for the Dutch side on their way to the title, it's believed that Phillip Cocu want to sign him on a permanent deal.
Of course, as with any of the players that had been sent out on loan last season, their immediate futures remain unclear. Once everyone reports back for pre-season training and have spent a few weeks with the new boss, everyone would have more of an idea on where they stand and their future at Chelsea beyond the summer. For Van Ginkel I would imagine that the club would not want to stand in his way if he wants to leave and return to Holland.
It's such a shame that he was struck down by injury here after a good pre-season under Jose Mourinho and featuring in the first few games of that season three seasons ago. After struggling to get over his cruciate ligament injury he was sent out on loan to AC Milan and then onto Holland and has not featured in a Chelsea shirt since that time.
Van Ginkel is someone who can be the box-to-box midfielder we have missed in our squad since the likes of Ramires and Frank Lampard of all people have left. If you add goals to the equation and his obvious ability to stick the ball in the back of the net from midfield, then you would have to question whether or not he is someone we should really look to hold onto.
The problem for Van Ginkel and for Chelsea is that if he isn't given first team football here next season or any indication from Conte that he will be involved then his next step in the game will become clear and he would be sold.
What do you think of Van Ginkel? Is he someone the club should look to hold onto?
