Patrick Bamford is a player I can tell you. Whether it's in a Chelsea shirt in the future or not, Bamford will become an established Premier League goalscorer. You can imagine my surprise that according to some newspaper reports Chelsea have made him available this summer for £10m!
Roberto Di Matteo at Aston Villa and Rafa Benitez at Newcastle are both reportedly interested and are preparing a move for the Chelsea hit man who, just one year ago, was named as the Championship Player of the Year after a successful loan spell at Middlesborough.
I've always rated Bamford and anyone that has had a chance to follow his career will know that he one of the most natural finishers in the game. He has proven himself at all the levels of the game up to the Premier League but having spent half the year on loan at Crystal Palace and the other at Norwich, he has failed to make an impact of any note so finds himself in limbo with a decision to be made on his future.
For the player himself it's clear that he needs regular first team football next season having reached the high he did two years ago, to follow up with a difficult year this time around.
Does he look to have another crack at the Premier League with maybe someone like Middlesborough who know all about him and and what he can offer having spent time on loan there previously. In my opinion that would be the perfect solution but whether or not that happens is another thing.
As far as Chelsea are concerned a decision will have to be made as he has two years remaining on his contract. If they send him out on loan again this season and give him another year away, they could find themselves in a difficult situation if he does not wish to discuss anything relating to a new deal. At that point, he would be sold for less money or if no agreement was reached, he would walk away for nothing on a free transfer. The club MUST decide this summer if he is surplus to requirements (which some newspapers are reporting) then they need to cash in on him now with Newcastle being the club prepared to make a permanent offer.
With all Chelsea's problems with their strikers over the past few seasons (apart from Diego Costa), you look at the likes of Patrick Bamford and wonder why these people are not given a chance as backup to the big Spaniard? He has proven himself everywhere else so why not give him a crack here? Just look what happened when Harry Kane was given a go!
I stand by what I have said here and am happy to go on record doing so. Patrick Bamford will become one of the top Premier League Strikers in the future. If we sell him, it would be a big mistake that could come back to bite us!
What do you think?
