It's the news that most of us have wanted to hear since the turn of the year as Chelsea Football Club confirm that John Terry has signed a new one-year contact at Stamford Bridge. Although it's excellent news, we await to see just how influential he remains.
As I posted here this morning, reports had emerged over the terms of the new deal that Chelsea publicly offered last week. Those reports stated that he would have to take a significant pay cut and accept that his standing within the squad would be considerably diminished.
As you can see above, everything has been signed and sealed so it looks as though everyone seems happy enough. I cannot help but think there is much more to this and we await clarification of just how much our Captain will play AND for that matter, if he would remain as Captain?
So to the new deal and plenty of people have had their say. JT was up first and he said:
‘I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through.
I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one.
Also, a special mention to the fans for their continued support. You’re the best in the world.’
Bruce Buck also took time to talk about the deal and he said:
‘We are delighted John will spend another year at the club. He has been the leader of the Chelsea squad throughout the most successful period in our history. He recently reached the 700-appearance mark, which is testament to his professionalism and dedication as well as his undoubted talent.’
Marina Granovskaia also spoke of the deal, the woman believed to have been at the head of negotiations. She said:
‘We look forward to another year with John at the club, and believe he will be an important figure in the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to bring success back to the club next season.’
I don't want to be negative about this in anyway at all as I am as thrilled anyone at the fact that he is staying here for another year. However, we cannot look past the fact that it seemed as though the club decided against renewing his contract. It's only been in recent weeks since the announcement that Antonio Conte was taking control this summer that things have changed. It's worth noting that the clubs official Website has stated that the new manager was involved in discussions over a new deal.
I really, really hope that JT has exactly the same role under him as he does now and remains an integral part of the makeup of our side next season. I guess it all depends on who comes in this summer and how they would compare? Surely, there is no one better!
