John Terry is due to meet with Chelsea today to discuss and have clarity on his future beyond the final game of the season against Leicester on Sunday. It's now expected that he is to be told that it's over and he is free to leave!
There has always been a hope that things would be sorted out between the man who has Captained Chelsea over 500 times and is without question, the greatest ever Captain at this club. Despite his very public announcement earlier in the season that there is no new contract, we have felt that the club would see sense finally and realise that he remains the best defender we have at the club despite his age. It seems that is all just a pipe-dream and no-one upstairs at the Bridge has listened to the fans calls for him to be given a new deal.
Last night in our 1-1 draw with Liverpool which blew my acca here by the way, the Chelsea supporters made their feelings known and sang his name throughout to the Chelsea hierarchy that were present in the stands. It looks like their attempts are in vain as Michael Emenalo and Marina Granovskaia are to break the news to him later today.
It's believed that the club have taken the decision to do this now so that JT receives a proper send off form the supporters and doesn't suffer the same fate that Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole did a couple of years ago which was disgusting. If anything, it's the least they can do!
There is and will continue to be plenty written and spoken of over the next few days but I just want to try and express how I have felt about John Terry and the Chelsea team with him in it.
Much is made of the attacking talent worldwide in the game and we sit a laud over the likes of Eden Hazard, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. What people should also understand is that with attacking flair, you MUST have defensive stability and for the past 12-13 years with Terry in our side, we have had exactly that.
Do you know of anyone that cares as passionately about clean sheets as those three I have mentioned above would about scoring goals? Do you know of any other centre back in the game that would literally throw their body in the way to try and deny an opponent with a last ditch block as below?
Think back to the important partnerships he built and maintained through the most successful period in our history. The defensive pairing of Terry & William Gallas started it all but it's the partnership between Terry & Ricardo Carvalho that really became something. Both played such a pivotal role in our success over the years because of the instant rapport and understanding he had with them.
John Terry is a natural leader, a talker and a motivator on that pitch. He knows and understands what it takes to be a successful team and will ensure that everyone else around the club does also. You look at the likes of Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma when they have played next to him, they look to him to organise, to support and both feel comfortable with him being there. Without him, both look the total opposite.
His willingness to take an interest in the Academy and Chelsea Ladies is commendable, always giving advice, always guiding and coaching using the wealth of experience he has gained working with some of the biggest names in management.
John Terry is and has been the last of the Legendary spine of our team that our success was built around. I made the point for example about this time around not being as successful for Guus Hiddink because he has been found out! The last time he was here, he had the likes of Cech, Ballack, Lampard, Cole, Drogba AND Terry to count on and they would almost do his job for him. They became a machine. Fast-forward to now and we have nothing of the sort and that's what concerns all of us the most.
We have gotten used to the fact that JT was always there, always leading the team out with that armband on, saluting the fans week in, week out and giving his all in a Chelsea shirt. No matter if it was a win or a defeat, he would be over to acknowledge the supporters without fail. He is and always will be one of OUR own!
I am devastated that it has come to this. Devastated that the man that has led us through every battle we have had in the last 12 years, the only defender to win the Players Player of the Year in the Premier League and the best Premier League defender ever is about to leave this club. I know time passes by and football moves on, but I generally fear for us now. We MUST find someone who can fill his boots and when I say that, I mean in every single way. Chelsea lack voices on that pitch and arguably the biggest is leaving us.
John Terry is quite simply, the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be and should have a statue or a stand named after him here. He truly is "Captain, Leader Legend".
What do you think of John Terry and news that he WILL be leaving the club?
