It's a question that needs to be answered because as per numerous reports in recent weeks, Antonio Conte has identified Romelu Lukaku as the man to lead the line for Chelsea.
I would imagine that Lukaku would divide opinion amongst the Chelsea faithful reading this article. Some people would recall his time here previously where he was offered very little in terms of opportunities as something to not consider and to purely focus on what he has achieved in the Premier League since he moved away from Stamford Bridge. However, some people will remember his time here and state that he offered little.
Without question his move to Everton has been a success personally for the Belgian Striker but could he have the same impact back at Chelsea?
I say that based on Fernando Torres for example to when he came here first of all and his tribulations that followed for a long time afterwards. He came to Chelsea at the wrong time to which we can look back now and agree on. The Chelsea team had been moulded around Didier Drogba and his personal playing style. We all know the qualities Drogba has including dropping deep to hold the ball up and bring others into play - this was key for our team as we looked to build attacks around him.
Now think of Torres when he came after what he had achieved at Liverpool. Back then, the Liverpool team was built to supply Torres and he knew whenever the two full backs, wingers or Steven Gerrard in midfield picked the ball up, the first thing they would do was to look for his run in behind or down the channels. Torres knew by making those runs, he would be given the ball at the right moment.
So there you see two completely different players with different strengths and both with teams built around them. You then put both players together in the same team and it simply didn't work at all. Torres would make his runs and would not be given the ball as Chelsea looked to build slowly from the back, into midfield and then forward. Think of how many times you had witnessed the Spaniard throw his arms in the air in frustration because he wouldn't get the balls he wanted. In addition, he wasn't built to be strong as Drogba in holding up the ball and to bring others into play around him so when he tried to be that type of player again, it didn't work.
So to Lukaku and he pretty much has the same deal at Everton as Torres had at Liverpool. He knows that when he makes his runs he WILL receive the ball and within their general play, Everton will look to play to his strengths.
If he was to come to Chelsea would the players respond to his playing style in the same way the Everton players have? Let's not forget that until at least a couple of months into next season, none of us will have a clue as to how Antonio Conte will want to set his team up tactically and the approach he wants to implement.
I personally champion the idea that a new man comes in and builds a tactical approach and philosophy around the players he has available to him, rather than try to mould the players he has into something different.
If Lukaku is the man Conte wants then the indications are that he would do exactly that and build a team around the Belgian to get the best out of him.
I would have him back here in a heartbeat. What about you?
