The game changed in Chelsea's favour as soon as Alexandre Pato came on against Aston Villa and that's because without Diego Costa, he gives us a different option.
I've been banging on for weeks for Pato to be given a chance. Having a website created counting the number of days he hadn't played since his arrival, people declaring that he is passed it and a waste of time signing him, I generally feel vindicated after just a single performance!
Loic Remy gives us nothing but someone to get on the end of things in the box with the same being said of Radamel Falcao for that matter. When we are without Diego Costa, Chelsea struggle because much of our play is about the build up, about intricate passing to open the door and for someone to make defenders move around.
Alexandre Pato give me more in the first twenty minutes of his debut to half time than Loic Remy had given me all season and that's staggering in my opinion. Chelsea really have struggled for goals without Costa relying on the likes of Fabregas, Pedro and Willian in recent weeks. Having come on half way into the first half, for the remainder of the game, Pato was heavily involved in THREE of our goals!
As I said it's his movement off of the ball that creates opportunities. Whether it's to be an option for a simple pass, a through ball or to get involved in a one-two situation as he did with Oscar for our third goal, Pato was excellent.
He makes defenders think and second guess themselves as whether or not to follow his run or to leave it to someone else. He looks quite deceiving also as he jogs around the pitch then bursts into life with the long athletic stride he has to take him away from his opponent. Most importantly he creates uncertainty in and around the oppositions box which is something we do not see without Costa.
He stepped out wide left to get involved in possession that led to our first goal. His run off the ball int the box won the penalty to which he subsequently scored. He stepped off and away from his marker to make himself available to Oscar to play a great one-two which opened up the Villa defence for our third and picked up the ball wide left striding forward forcing his defender backwards before aiming a right foot curler towards the far corner that led to the Goalkeeper making a mess of the save and Pedro clipping the ball into the net for our fourth of the game! Three goals he was directly involved in!
I understand people have an opinion and everyone is entitled to it but when it comes to Pato I honestly believe in his talent and ability and believe that he could make a real difference to Chelsea going forward. If we lose Diego Costa, we need to sign him up as quickly as possible as you have seen just how he can be the link man up top to our midfield.
Before the game people had written him off. I wonder how they feel about him now?
