Matt Miazga has hailed our performance on his Premier League debut against Aston Villa as "flawless" and I wondered what your first impressions are of the big American defender?
I have to be honest and admit that when the team came out with no JT or Gary Cahill, but Miazga next to Ivanovic I was apprehensive to say the least! On reflection, I didn't have to worry and the game was the perfect time to give him his debut.
Miazga spoke post match and said:
"The boys were fantastic today. The starting 11 were brilliant and the guys who came in were flawless.
Aston Villa just lost their manager, so we knew they would be energetic trying to show their fans they are still in it, and the first 20 minutes was a bit like a chess match, but we settled down and got the first goal from Ruben.
It was a good debut for me, I’m happy to contribute to the team and now I have to work hard in training to keep trying to get more chances.
I found out in the morning I would be in the starting 11. It’s my job, my profession and I have to be ready when I am called upon and show the manager I can contribute and help the club."
I said it was the perfect chance to give him the start and it was if you think about it. First and foremost he would come up against one of the tallest and physical strikers in the League in Gestede so it would be good to see how he would cope.
For the most part he did well and dealt with what he faced. But for one or two lost headers and a couple of moments where he was turned and found wanting, overall it was a good debut performance.
He looks comfortable on the ball also and doesn't panic when in possession. Granted we knew that he would not face the toughest test up against a Villa side low on confidence and suffering a lack of firepower this season, but there was still a challenge to be met and a game to be won. The fact we registered our first clean sheet in a while was an added bonus!
I'd like to see him up against a sterner test and someone quick to see how much pace he has. Overall in my opinion, a raw talent and a little rough around the edges but a good solid start at Chelsea.
What did you think?
