According to various reports in the press in recent days, Antonio Conte has given the go-ahead for the £50m sale of Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who has become disillusioned with life at Stamford Bridge. Opinions vary but I am wondering what the Chelsea fans think of the news?
Courtois came back to Chelsea after spending three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid in La Liga. With just two years left on his contract and Chelsea having to face the possibility of Courtois being free to negotiate with other clubs a year later, Chelsea made him our first choice ahead of Petr Cech last season and wrapped up a five-year extension to his contract. As we know Chelsea won the Premier League and League Cup in his first season with the club.
This season has been a very different story and a far cry from the heights of celebrating the title. Courtois was sent off in our opening game of the season, then suffered a serious injury which kept him out of the side for three months. After a return to the side and questions of his performances, Courtois has missed recent games for Chelsea after being sent off for the second time in our defeat against Manchester City.
If the reports are true, Courtois faces that being his last appearance for Chelsea as Conte looks to mould the squad into the players he wants. There is a general opinion that Conte will take no crap from anyone at all and if they want to leave he will not stand in their way. I have to admit, I do get that opinion from the big Belgian shot-stopper.
Let's not forget that Courtois was very, very critical of the Chelsea set-up this season in an interview published recently and it would have infuriated many of the Chelsea fans.
The Champions League is where the big players want to showcase their ability season in, season out and without it next year, Chelsea could face losing a couple more as they look to move to clubs due to take part next year. Whether or not it's with Atletico or Real, Courtois being tipped with a move to Madrid. Will they pay the asking price?
