According to various reports, Antonio Conte has made Romelu Lukaku his top transfer target this summer in a move that will surprise many. However, the player himself has set his sights on Champions League football next season!
One thing is certain here, It's going to take Chelsea a serious amount of money to try and convince Everton to let him go. Some people have quoted DOUBLE the amount we sold him for (£28m) at around £56m! Should we be spending that amount of money on just one player?
So what do you all think of Lukaku since he left the Blues? Is he someone you would like to see back here?
In his defence and in my opinion, he joined the club at the wrong time with the likes of Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres around. He was never going to force himself ahead of either of them into selection. If anything, he only was given a few chances to play through the middle with AVB using him out wide on occasion which as we know isn't his game at all.
He moved to Everton and has been a revelation. His game has really kicked on now and he is well on his way to becoming the finished article. There ARE some areas of his game that need to improve with his ability in the air being one of them. However, as I said, his game really has come on strong and he is scoring plenty.
Lukaku was always a player in the Chelsea mould in my opinion. We had been set up to play off of Drogba for a decade and with the frame Lukaku has, even at such a young age, if the timing was right, he could have really hit the ground running here but it was never to be.
He is strong, he is two-footed and quick off the mark which always gives him a chance in games but in the past couple of seasons it's his movement and positioning that have really progressed through a regular run of games playing week in, week out.
If Chelsea offered Everton that amount of money straight away rather than waiting and offering money that wouldn't even tempt the club to consider (just as we did with John Stones) then I believe the side from Goodison Park would have to accept. The problem we have now is that in recent days Lukaku has talked up a desire to play Champions League football next season which is something that Chelsea will NOT be able to offer.
He said:
"I’m 23 next summer and it would be nice to play in the Champions League next season."
Lukaku's Father had added fuel to the fire as far as speculation goes by suggesting that his son should consider the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich next season. He said:
"I see that there is interest from Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Chelsea and Manchester United. He’s ready. In my eyes Rom has to join Bayern or Manchester United. United are a team under construction with no real focus. Bayern Munich are a machine where he can rotate well. The only condition is if Robert Lewandowski leaves.”
That's the problem Chelsea have now - a lack of European Football next season and that's something we are going to have to contend with when we are looking to sign some big names to rejuvenate our squad.
I personally believe that Diego Costa will leave in the summer because of exactly that so for me Lukaku is a perfect replacement.
The question we have to ask ourselves apart from his "love" for Chelsea, is would he want to re-join Chelsea?
What do you people think of him? Would you re-sign him for big money if he wanted to come?
