We currently sit just EIGHT points behind Manchester City albeit with Manuel Pellegrini's side having a game in hand. The frustrating thing for me is the points we have dropped from when Guus Hiddink came in and took over. If we had turned those draws into wins, we would be right back in contention for the top four.
Nemanja Matic certainly believes that qualification is possible in the Europa League and we still have not written off a Champions League place either. He said:
"We're a big team and we have to do this if we want to be closer to the first four. It's very difficult to catch them, but we'll try our best to win every game.
I think we can be in the first six, but we will try to win every game. I know it's difficult, maybe impossible, but in football anything can happen.
We will go game by game, step by step, and we will see in the end where we finish in the league."
Based on our current form we have an excellent chance. However, after Stoke at home in the Premier League this weekend, we have two tough games coming up, PSG in the Champions League next Wednesday 9th followed by Everton in the FA Cup the following Saturday evening with the latter being the competition we have the best chance of winning.
Back to the Premier League and we follow up this weekend against West Ham at home followed by Aston Villa and Swansea away. Imagine what ten or twelve points could do for our league position especially as West Ham are one of our rivals for the Europa League place.
It's important that we continue as we have been by taking each game as it comes. Hopefully, we will have John Terry back to full fitness shortly and Alexandre Pato is ready to come in so the options available to Guus Hiddink are improving. In addition, we have the likes of Kenedy, Bertrand Traore and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all making an impact when they have been required so things are really looking good.
There is still a long way to go in the Premier League but after last nights results, it's another example of how everyone can beat each other so it's far from over yet.
I personally think we will finish sixth and obtain what hopefully should be the additional Europa League position with Man City winning the League Cup last weekend.
What do you people think?
