In addition to the disappointing performance and result against Manchester United yesterday was what looked like a horrific injury to Kurt Zouma. Gary Cahill will now get his chance with Matt Miazga waiting in the wings.
It was only recently that we had heard reports from "Chelsea sources" that Cahill was not happy at not playing regular first team football and that we wanted to leave the club in January. This was with a view to the summer and Euro 2016 with the likes of John Stones pushing him for a start next to Phil Jagielka.
Guus Hiddink played down these reports and stated that he had a conversation with Cahill and although he wasn't happy with not playing, he wanted to stay and to fight for his place. Now with the Zouma injury he has a chance to really stake a claim between now and the end of the season but his performances MUST be better than they have previously been this season.
I really like Cahill and he has proven himself here since he arrived. I've lost count how many times he puts himself in the right areas to make an important block or tackle at the last minute to deny the opposition. Time and time again he would come up with something to get us out of trouble.
The problem we had this season in the early stages was that he kept drifting out of position and being caught out, whether that's because he was told to man mark his direct opponent and followed his run as a result is unclear but at times he looked all over the place.
Cahill like many others suffered a massive dip in confidence as a result and lost his place in the side with Kurt Zouma stepping in and making the position his own without question.
To lose Zouma is a massive blow because of the influence he has at the back and most importantly because of his pace. Chelsea need to adjust without him and it will be interesting to see how Guus Hiddink reacts in the next game because we know that Matt Miazga is not match fit as yet but when he is I wonder if he would give him a go rather than Cahill?
We hope that scans today are positive for Zouma but again it looked like a horrible injury at the time. Watching the game back on TV last night you could hear him scream out in agony.
Zouma did speak to the French Press after the game and said:
"It is better. We will see, I heard something but I feel better. Tomorrow (Monday), I will undergo tests and we will know more.”
Fingers crossed for Zouma that he is back in contention as quickly as possible but let's hope that by the time he does get fit he faces much more of a battle to get back into the team.
