If you were to ask any Chelsea fan who would be their player of the season this year the answer would be Willian. In the darkest depths of despair in the first half of our season, Willian was the only player to come through that period with any credit. He was immense for us and his levels of performance maintain a constant as others around him suffered badly.
Willian kept giving it his all, working hard for the manager and for his team mates, scoring important goals for us and in a word was outstanding. This has remained constant as we moved into the second half of the season under Guus Hiddink and if anything, his performances have got better and better!
So to the new contract and there is talk of a deal worth a reported £120,000 per week and I have to admit I am shocked at that because I thought he would on somewhere near that already. Think back to the performances he gave in the early part of the season compared to Eden Hazard who, by the sounds of it, is on double what Willian earns at the moment!
We find ourselves in a difficult position in the Premier League but it's getting better as each game passes and we are not that far off of a Europa League place. The top four is beyond us unless there is a major downturn in fortunes for those that currently occupy those positions and that's the biggest worry I have about the summer.
With the prestige the Champions League now has, it's the one competition the big players want to play in every season. They want to appear on the biggest club stage and for Chelsea to be without that next year it could have a dramatic effect on how our squad looks next season.
Our big players such as Costa, Courtois, Fabregas, Hazard, Oscar and Willian are likely to be the subject of interest from the big European clubs that CAN offer them Champions League football next year and I can see at least two or three of those names leaving because of that. Chelsea would do well to hold on to most.
Willian has proven this season more than any other just how good he is, how influential he can be and just how well he has settled into the pace of the game here. He really has flourished at our club and would be the one player that would walk into any other Premier League team right now based on overall form this year. Without question, he would be up for awards at the end of the season.
Talk of an extended contract is welcome news and the best thing Chelsea can do is to get him signed up and committed to Chelsea for next season and beyond because we are going to need players like him to take us back to challenging for the title.
Come on Roman, Sign him up ASAP!
