Guus Hiddink spoke in his pre-match press conference ahead of our meeting with PSG tonight and stated that it's the biggest week of our season so far. This is a massive six days coming up!
First we take on PSG in a huge game tonight and need a positive result to take back to Stamford Bridge. Then on Sunday we face Manchester City at home in the FA Cup which is yet another massive game. It's the only silverware available to us this season and to have two nightmare results would compound our season as one of the worst in recent memory.
Hiddink said:
"We have a key week, of course. This week, indeed this round, in the Champions League and FA Cup is a key week as to whether we go in a nice flow into the next round of the FA Cup, go further in the Champions League.
We desperately desire the chance to go through to the next round but also we must take into consideration the second game with Manchester City at the weekend so it’s a nice week for Chelsea.
The players have experience. They know these two competitions are the only way to get success and I hope they can perform under pressure.
For them, it must be very challenging, to be in the next round of the Champions League.
They have the experience to do it. The circumstances are a little bit different from last year but we must rise to the occasion.
We need to show that we can continue what we’ve started, step-by-step with a few bigger steps into the spring and hopefully we can have a beautiful spring.
I think in a few weeks the team has restored its confidence a bit, getting some results, better results recently and there’s a little bit better perspective and we hope we can continue with that.
This club will always go for silverware (over fourth), but, on the other hand, we know this year is very complicated for Chelsea. I like to go for silverware because it’s not realistic to think you can get fourth place.
Even in this difficult year for Chelsea, if you can achieve that (winning a trophy), it would an unexpected but huge success.”
Being honest, the FA Cup is our only realistic chance of silverware this season and I would take that if offered right now. We aren't going to beat the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich to the Champions League this season. We still need to get passed PSG first!
We are playing well now however and as we have seen in the passed anything is possible. We look like a confident side once again, we look to have a spring in our step and most importantly are scoring goals again so you never know!
This is the biggest six days of our season so far. Can Chelsea deliver what's required in both games?
