As all sorts of names are being linked with the Chelsea Manager's job this summer I wonder if we already have the answer in John Terry. What do you think about JT as our new manager?
Think of the man who has led this team through the most successful period in our club's history. Think of the man who commands respect of his team mates and his opponents week in, week out in the Premier League. Think of the man who many consider to be the greatest ever Chelsea player and Captain - I give you John Terry.
Throughout the last decade, John Terry has become almost an institution here. He is loved and adored by everyone and most of all respected for what he has achieved at this club. Think of how many managers he has played for and worked with and it's an impressive list, each with their own take on football and approach. During that period he would have learnt different things from each (good or bad) and adapted his game as a player but those ideas could also help him take the step into management.
Think of how popular Jose Mourinho was and despite everything, still is with the Chelsea fans. That's because we felt a connection with him, we felt that he was fighting for us and we felt that he was one of us. He represented us and listening to him defend us and to speak about us the way he did only helped love him more.
That's the key thing for me moving forward into the summer and to our next managerial appointment, we MUST have the same connection with the manager and he must also have that with the players. Without it and we could face being back at square one sooner rather than later.
John Terry is Chelsea, he is the player we all look up to, he is our "Captain, Leader and Legend" at this club and the one person we have the ultimate connection with. Could he be as successful as a Manager of Chelsea as he is a player?
JT knows the game inside out and has come up against plenty of different styles in his time as a player. He reads the game better than most and understands what is being played out in front of him. As I stated, he commands respect in the dressing room as our Captain and as a player. He would command the same as Manager. Just look at the impact Roberto Di Matteo had here in those short few months as manager. He knew what this club means and what it takes to play for Chelsea.
John Terry also makes a point of taking a keen interest in how the Academy is doing, how the players are progressing is often seen watching their games in person so he would already have that knowledge to hand moving forward. We continue to bang on about bringing players through the system from the Academy into the first team and I believe that JT would encourage that.
Imagine a managerial team here of JT as manager with Frankie Lampard and Didier Drogba as Assistants? They have been through it all here, have won everything and they ARE Chelsea. They understand just what this club is, what it takes and what wearing Chelsea blue means.
I know there is a stand off at the moment between JT and the club about a new playing contract. Why not try to convince that John Terry's future is here but as a Manager from next season. Let's face it, we will be without Champions League football and possibly Europa League. All we will have to focus on will be the three domestic competitions so why not do it now rather than in a few years time?
At some stage John Terry will become the Chelsea Manager. Is this something we should be considering now?
