I personally could not believe it when I saw the Manchester City team selection ahead of kick off. In my view it was a total lack of respect for the competition from Manuel Pellegrini but for Chelsea, there was still a game to be won.
Now we know that City have an important Champions League fixture tomorrow night at Dynamo Kiev which in my opinion is a two-legged tie that City should and will win to progress through to the next round barring a total disaster in the Ukraine. However, to decide to field the side Pellegrini did was ridiculous and he should be fined for it or at least made to pay for those City supporters tickets and travel to the game as a refund.
Manchester City will not win the Champions League or the Premier League this season based on their current form so why not play your strongest eleven against Chelsea three days before the game? Chelsea had to do it and play against Newcastle at 17:30 on the Saturday night for a game the following Tuesday and we played our full strength side!
Think about the situation the two sides found themselves in heading into the game also because I believe that it should have had some bearing on Pellegrini's thought process here. City had lost the last few games to Leicester and Tottenham in the Premier League so why wasn't this game an opportunity for City to go full strength and look for a win to build confidence ahead of Kiev? Chelsea need to keep winning to keep our momentum going. We aren't going to win the Premier League or Champions League this season either but a win is a win!
For forty-five minutes in this one City were well in the game at 1-1 and Chelsea just couldn't find the right pass, the right movement off the ball to add to the goal Diego Costa scored after a delightful Eden Hazard cross to make it 1-0.
After the second half it was a different story with goals from Willian, Cahill, Hazard and Traore with Oscar missing a penalty in addition. Chelsea won at a canter and although it was enjoyable, it could have been so much more of a spectacle if the true opposition would have turned up!
All the Chelsea players were outstanding with Willian, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro the standouts from the game. Willian continues to play at such a high level on a regular basis it was nice to see him get on the score sheet again.
Eden Hazard after the stick he took in midweek, gave us a performance we have craved and hope he can do the same at home against PSG. It's the really big games he needs to do it now but the signs are good based on this performance.
Cesc Fabregas was once again the orchestrator in midfield and popped his passes around for fun all game. It's great to see him playing with confidence and a swagger once again.
As for Pedro after a disappointing period at the club! Well, that was one of the first times watching him give a performance that we used to sit and watch him give week in, week out at FC Barcelona and it's so encouraging to see.
This was a good performance and as I said initially, you still have to go out there and win the game no matter who you face. Let's see if after this week it was worth it for Manuel Pellegrini!
