When Pedro Rodriguez signed for Chelsea from Barcelona it was exciting. When he scored on his debut I was even more so. Now, a couple of months later I am wondering what has happened to the Spanish winger?
We have read numerous reports in the press that he has had difficulty in settling into life at Chelsea and being selected in the team one minute and left on the bench the next hasn't helped. Now that Jose Mourinho has been sacked, I am wondering if we are about to see the real Pedro under Guus Hiddink especially as Eden Hazard has his injury problems?
I have always held Pedro in high regard and see him as a real impact player. Look at him back at Barcelona and you think of his pace, his ability with the ball to beat players left, right and centre and of course goals. When he signed for us, I couldn't wait for him to play for us and if anything, I thought he would make much more of a challenge for a regular start by putting pressure on Willian for example with Willian challenging Oscar for the start as our number ten.
For one reason or another it hasn't happened and although he still has plenty in his locker it has seemed as though he has lost confidence as very rarely do we see him really run and go at defenders as we saw in Spain.
I just wonder if he is still coming to terms with the pace and power of the Premier League. We take the physical nature of our game for granted and we have to allow for a period for players to come in, adjust and settle down.
Pedro scored recently against Sunderland at home, his first goal at Stamford Bridge and you can only imagine what that could for his confidence. With the new manager in place looking to bring the best of his players as individuals and of the team as a unit, we could see Pedro make much more of an impact between now and the end of the season.
I back Pedro starting tomorrow against Scunthorpe rather than heading to casinos with Starburst slot and would back him to score again. I cannot underestimate just how important I believe this period until the end of the season could be for him with the continued reports of Eden Hazard leaving in the summer. He has a chance to force his way into the team now.
Let's hope he takes it because apart from one or two moments, he has been disappointing.
