Loic Remy is to leave Chelsea before the transfer window closes with both Crystal Palace and Newcastle looking to sign him. After his performance on Sunday I think it's a good deal for everyone.
Some will argue that Remy has not had enough chances at the club and some would even state that he should have been given a regular start earlier in the season when we were struggling to score goals. I do agree with the latter point but he was always coming here to be a backup striker, an alternative option to the main man we have at the club in Diego Costa.
Remy is a natural finisher and has scored goals wherever he has played and I am sure he will continue to do so. The question is whether or not you believe that he is good enough for Chelsea? I know it sounds pompus or even ridiculous but it should be taken into consideration seriously. The same was said of Demba Ba!
His performance on Sunday, having replaced Diego Costa with around twenty minutes to go, gives you an explanation or at least an example of what I am trying to say here. Whether this is down to match fitness or just confidence I don't know. He was caught offside at least five times within that period when it was simple enough (with the pace he has) to look across the line and then make his move.
In addition, on two occasions late on when Chelsea broke with the ball into the Arsenal half, he stopped the move, tried to cut back inside to where the ball had come from and made it easy for the Arsenal defenders to make their tackle and win the ball back!
Prime example of this is when in the dying minutes Eden Hazard broke with the ball into the Arsenal half. We found ourselves with a two-on-one situation as Arsenal had pushed men forward. Hazard waited for the right moment and played the ball to his right in the path of Remy. All Remy had to do was to allow the ball to come across his body, take a touch forward and fire his shot off towards goal. It really was the only option and would have guaranteed a shot on target and something for Petr Cech to think about as the Arsenal defenders tried to track back without any real hope of getting back in time.
What did he do? As above, he stopped the ball and looked to come back inside which allowed the defenders tracking back time to win it back. It was almost as if he lacked total confidence, agility and seemed almost laboured to the point where he was at a total loss of what to do. It was such a wasted opportunity it really was and for someone who hasn't featured much of late, a genuine chance to get on the score sheet to force himself upon Guus Hiddink for selection this weekend against the MK Dons!
So to this week and it looks as though he is leaving which as I said is the best result for everyone concerned. Crystal Palace have just signed Emmanual Adebayor which is a fabulous signing for them and I wonder if they will now follow up on Remy? A pairing of those two up top could be exciting for the South Londoners.
What about Newcastle? He has played there before and would be almost guaranteed a regular start week in, week out. He is just what they need at the moment as they fight for their Premier League survival.
We are now into 2016 and the European Championships are almost upon us. Loic Remy needs to be playing regular football to have a chance of making the French squad. He isn't going to get that here and expect a deal with someone to be announced shortly.
What do you think of Remy at Chelsea?
