It's a question for the Chelsea fans out there who have expected to see more of our summer signing. Do you think that Baba Rahman should be given a run of games now to improve competition for places within our back four?
Bransilav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta were our nailed on regular starters last season and provided the team with a solid base to build from. This season has been a very different story so far for one reason or another and to his credit Kurt Zouma has forced his way into the side and has cemented his place week in, week out. Should we be looking at Rahman to now do the same?
Rahman came here with a reputation for being a tough tackler with the best record in the Bundesliga last season. Out of 108 attempted tackles, he completed 90 of them, meaning a success rate of 83% and at only 21 years of age, he has so much more to learn playing alongside the likes of John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta. The problem is, he has not been given that much of a look in so far.
Based on the fact he has hardly featured, and with the transfer window open, there had been some suggestions that he could leave Chelsea this month either in a permanent deal or on loan but his agent has put an end to any talk by saying:
"There is nothing lined up for now. He is certainly going to stay at Chelsea."
Looking at how we are playing at the moment, if we are honest, Branislav Ivanovic seems to have gotten over his poor form at the beginning of the season and has pulled himself together. He has played consistently well of late and keeps Rahman out of the side as we can all agree that Cesar Azpilicueta MUST play as he is the best one-on-one defender in the Premier League in my opinion.
The problem is that we all know Ivanovic lacks pace and as soon as he comes up against a flying winger again he will struggle. Arsenal in particular coming up will be a concern in my view.
Tonight against West Brom at home we have a chance to give Rahman a run out at left back and move Azpilicueta back over to the right hand side. It's the perfect opportunity to do so and being honest, I expected him to play against Scunthorpe at the weekend but that never happened.
Players such as Baba Rahman will only get better and improve with games. They have to be exposed to what the game is all about over here to get used to the pace and power of our football. How on earth are they supposed to adjust to life in England if they spend forever on the bench or never involved?
I believe we should be giving him a chance. What do you think?
