Nemanja Matic has been speaking the Official Chelsea Website and has given an indication (without knowing it) of what our problem has been this season - motivation!
It's hard to believe really coming off the back of winning the Premier League title and FA Cup last season! OK, granted for the majority of the players, it was their first trophies in Chelsea Blue and in England but still, how can a professional player, paid thousands each week, not be even more motivated to do better this term?
Here's what he actually said:
"I cannot explain why consistency has been so difficult to achieve.
I don't know what happened to us against Leicester. In the game against Porto, a very good team, we played very well, we scored two goals and created chances, but we were like another team on the pitch against Leicester.
It is one more game that was not good for us. We are sad because of the defeat but we have to keep going, to try to win some games and to recover from this situation which is not easy for us. We have to try to be better than we were."
The Player himself admits that we looked like a totally different outfit compared to the side that played and beat FC Porto in the Champions League. We had virtually the same side out so what's the problem?
Looking at how we won the League last season by going out from the start and dominating, to then almost saunter our way to the title without playing really well for the second half of the season has had an effect on the players and that have carried that same attitude into this thinking it will be the same!
You MUST earn the right to win a game of Premier League football no matter who you face because the standard in our league is getting stronger as each season passes. The introduction of the new Sky TV deal and the financial rewards on offer will only make other teams stronger so you have to adopt the right approach to every single game.
Chelsea's players have been found out this season (check the most recent article to this one for more on that) and they have only themselves to blame. They have walked into this season thinking it will be a doddle and now they find themselves one point of the relegation places with the top four now a pipe dream!
Serious questions need to be asked of this lot and not just the manager!
