"Chelsea have never replaced Frank Lampard and now they miss him" was stated by Pat Nevin and I wondered if you agree or disagree with him?
Pat Nevin for those not old enough to remember was a Chelsea Hero in the 80's and played such an important role for our club as we won promotion back to the top league in England at the time.
Nowadays he features as a Football Pundit on various channels including Chelsea TV. Speaking recently, Nevin as with many other ex-Chelsea players, Managers or people that have a genuine connection to the club was asked of our plight at the moment and he said:
"I noticed, as many did, that Frank Lampard was discussing it on UK TV. First of all I felt sorry for him that in his new role, right away, he has to try to deal with his beloved Chelsea’s bad run,
He had his own thoughts, but subliminally there must have been Chelsea supporters watching who were thinking, ‘now if we had a player who was world-class at arriving late in the danger area, we would probably still be in and around the top four right now, somebody like er…Frank Lampard was.’”
The problem is there aren’t that many around in world football like Frank Lampard was so he is pretty hard to replace.
Of course he wasn’t going to last forever but seeing him doing analysis after the game does rather drive it home when a young Frank in blue would be a big part of the answer to all the current questions.”
Is he right? It's all well and good saying this now after our current struggles but we cannot forget that we won the League last season, our first without Frank and everything seemed rosy!
No one will ever replace Frank Lampard at this club and only now as his generation has either stopped playing or is about to, will people realise what an amazing player and goalscorer he was.
Guess what? That's our problem this season though isn't it! We just cannot seem to put the ball in the back of the net if Willian isn't about.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has a goal in him without question as per his goal the other day posted here!
Who else is there or do you think that the game in this country has changed so much that we will never see the likes of Lampard again with the typical "Late run into the box"?
People have to remember that Lamps flourished in Jose's 4-3-3 formation and scored most of his goals from running deep in that formation. Nowadays the switch has been made to a 4-2-3-1 formation so you do not rely on the deeper midfielders to break their necks to get into the box because of their defensive responsibilities! Maybe the answer is 4-3-3!
What do you think of what Pat has said though. Do you agree we have never replaced Frank Lampard?

@Ocheme I thought Osgar will be gud after Lamps but no one till now..
ReplyDeleteOscar would thrive in a 4 3 3 and soon another club will buy him and prosper from his skills. Another player Chelsea will lose to a successful career in another club. When will it end?
DeleteCould,nt agree more Mike,,always seems to be the one/subbed,or is brought on to late to change anything,,,to me this player has it all,we have used him,;imo;very poorly.and I for one would not blame him if he wanted a move.he,s been played, like other players, out of position many a time,,never seems to complain,we just have to stop wasting the Talent we have at hand..and then seeing other clubs, reaping the benefit..
DeleteJose has a tough job on hand. He must be praying that Roman fires him and puts him out of his misery. He is going through the first major crisis of his career and frighteningly has no answers for the problems.
ReplyDeleteReplacing Lampard is nigh on impossible, can anyone come up with a homegrown (i.e. British) midfielder who regularly scores 15 to 20 goals a season?
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of Oscar and hope we keep him plus make him a regular starter but a Lampard he isn't.
However, we have several exceptional prospects in our academy who could well be the next Frank but the frustration continues to be that we don't bring them through to the first team!
