Chelsea blew a fantastic chance to close the gap on Manchester City to just FIVE points up at Newcastle on Saturday night and if anything the game demonstrated the state of our season so far.
Knowing we had that chance, knowing that Newcastle were low on confidence, under pressure and that we had come off the back of a good win against Arsenal, I will and could never understand how we went out in that first half and played the way we did. It was unacceptable and Jose Mourinho admitted after the game that he needed to try to understand why it happened.
We go to Newcastle who had appealed to their supporters to get behind the team and the manager, knowing they are going to be up for it, will come out all guns blazing for at least the first twenty minutes, you MUST dig in, remain compact and look to hit them on the counter.
That never happened. Newcastle dominated us in the first half and credit to them. They came out and pressed us when in possession, closed down the space and took Pedro and Eden Hazard out the game.
Once again Cesc Fabregas was found wanting next to Matic as he was easily beaten for pace and let's face it, he can't tackle to save his life! Time and time again the home side turned us and found space behind our midfield putting our back four under pressure.
Talking of the back four, when will Jose Mourinho realise that someone needs to give Bransilav Ivanovic a kick up the arse or to drop him for the next league game against Southampton on Saturday!
Anyway the opening goal for Newcastle was another shambles. A long, high ball played into the box and Ayoze Perez (one of the smallest and slightest players on the pitch) finds himself caught in between Ivanovic and Zouma. As the ball comes over you think "no problem here" However, for some reason Zouma thinks it's Ivanovic's ball and he thinks it's Zouma's. As a result, Perez keeps his eye on the ball, takes a touch to bring it down in the box and volleys the ball into the bottom corner with his second touch to make it 0-1. Shocking and embarrassing defending!
We go in at half time a goal down and I was calling on Twitter for Loic Remy to come off because our problem in games such as that, is that you need someone up top who can hold onto the ball and for our midfielders to play off of him. Every single time he couldn't do it and time and time again the ball came straight back again. We really missed Diego Costa and if anything with Radamel Falcao on the bench, it goes to prove that without him we could really struggle.
At half time Jose makes no changes and you hope that Chelsea have had a kick up the arse and after five minutes it looks like they really have! We looked a different team totally and dominated the ball and in turn the game. Newcastle at times were just happy to get rid of the ball to try push up from the edge of their box but it kept coming back again as Pedro and Hazard were back in the game.
However, our optimism took a battering as Newcastle scored from a corner with a free header in the box. Cesc Fabregas was marking on if their centre halves for some reason and he shock him off and headed home from eight yards to make it 0-2 against the run of play!!
Jose finally reacts, takes off the disappointing Remy, Oscar and Matic for Falcao, Ramires and Willian and it works. Chelsea again dominate the home side forcing them backwards and it becomes a constant wave of pressure.
Then Chelsea pull a goal back from what I can only describe as a goal of the season contender from Ramires. Kurt Zouma plays a 50 yard pass from right to left and finds Eden Hazard wide left. He comes inside and lays the ball square to Ramires and the Brazilian hits a 30 yard screamer, first time into the top corner giving Tim Krul no chance 1-2!
Chelsea were now looking like a team again that ARE the Champions. Newcastle could not keep the ball, they could not get out of their half and after giving away another free kick wide left 30 yards from goal Willian stepped up, swung the ball into the box and it evades everyone including Ramires who's run distracts Tim Krul and the ball finds its way into the corner to make it 2-2 and a fantastic comeback from Chelsea.
As we head into the final few minutes you hope we can grab another and WE GET THAT CHANCE!! A ball from Fabregas finds Pedro in behind. He takes a touch a looks to be closing in on goal with just the Goalkeeper to beat but when it looks like a dead cert that he would score, he skies the ball high over the bar which would have given us all three points!
It's amazing to think that we could have won the game after all this. However, there really is no excuse for the way we approached the game in the first half. Serious question need to be answered as to why it took us until the second half to wake up.
As I said, it pretty much sums up our season so far though doesn't it!!
