Ask any Chelsea fan what our problem has been this season and it's been the amount of goals we are conceding compared to those we are scoring. Most would also point out Branislav Ivanovic as the main weakness. Gary Neville on SkySports Monday Night Football has a very different view.
I have been contemplating looking through every single goal Chelsea have conceded so far this season to try and spot what our weakness has been but in my mind, Neville has pinpointed the very reason in the video above.
Our back four is being exposed time and time again by our midfield and Nemanja Matic cannot do the defensive aspect of that position all by himself.
One thing I have noticed is that Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro all rotated positions far too much against Everton and it cost us possession of the ball and time and time again, allowed Everton to attack us because of a lack of shape and of numbers in the right positions in midfield.
I wrote a post shortly after the Everton defeat on Saturday giving some suggestions as to what should happen going forward so make sure you read it because there, I state that we need to maintain our shape and our positions.
I don't want to see Eden Hazard come inside with his back to goal and someone up his arse looking for the ball being played into feet. I want to see him wide left and given the ball with time to face his opponent, to then take him on as he did time and time again last year which became so effective.
Gary Neville has hit the nail on the head here and you can by doing the same by selecting a promo code here. It will be a wake up call to those (including me) that had originally stated that Branislav Ivanovic and Kurt Zouma were to blame for the goals. Although they still played their own individual parts, it's clear that defensively, our midfield isn't doing the job they did last year.
What do you people think?
