Cesc Fabregas had come under media scrutiny after a disappointing start to the Premier League season and our title defence. After registering his first assist this week against Maccabi Tel Aviv, Cesc has revealed it could be the start of something special.
How many times last season did we see Cesc Fabregas assist in a Chelsea goal? How many times did we see a Fabregas/Costa link that delivered a goal? Until Wednesday night, we hadn't see anything this season.
So to Wednesday and albeit against weaker opponents. Cesc picks the ball up, looks up and sees Diego Costa backing into his man on the edge of the box. Fabregas chips the ball into Costa and the big striker connects on the volley as he swings his body to his left and the ball flies high into the top corner giving the Goalkeeper no chance!
The moment could prove to be the catalyst for Fabregas this season and he has revealed that despite the public scrutiny, he has never suffered a dip in confidence and has called upon his team mates to kick on now starting with Arsenal.
He said:
"I believe in myself more than anyone.
Everyone has their doubts when you are not playing well and you don’t get the results you want, but I have been playing too long to worry about stuff that is not important. What is important is my form, getting that good and to be confident.
My confidence is always high, that is not a problem, but sometimes things don’t go well for you for many reasons. But as soon as we realise, like we did in the Maccabi game, that we are a fantastic football team, we can compete against the top teams. We won a lot last year and we have to show it this year.
We didn’t start the season well and when you see Chelsea so far down the table you have to check twice to make sure this is happening. We have a big game again on Saturday, so we must not rest and enjoy this week’s win, we just want to get another win and then we will see what happens.
We just have to win. It is a London derby, we know Arsenal are a quality team, they play top football and it will be tough but we want to win and we can achieve that on Saturday.
The Maccabi game was a vital win, a top performance from start to end and we need Chelsea to play like this week in and week out. Hopefully, it is the start of a long run for us to put smiles back on our faces and get the confidence back.
When you are Chelsea and you don't win people get nervous. Of course we players feel it. Big club, you need performances. I am not happy with my game but this is a team sport, none of us has been at the top of our game, but we hope this is the start of a run.”
I know as I have said that Maccabi were much weaker opposition that Arsenal will be tomorrow, but any form of a win will lift the players and breed much needed confidence. Add to that a manager who knows how to win the big games and we should be well up for the game now.
Big teams need big players and Cesc Fabregas is one of them without question. He is the orchestrator, the ringmaster and he makes Chelsea tick with a through ball from nowhere or a killer pass that can open up defences just like he did against Arsenal last season.
Let's hope that an assist and a goal for Fabregas this week can settle him down and he can really use that game as a platform for the rest of the season.
This is a big game tomorrow and Chelsea need the likes of Cesc Fabregas to have a big, big game!
