I'd imagine being Jose Mourinho, you plan your pre season around the players getting fit, the group coming together as one, no injuries and winning games to build a togetherness and confidence. It couldn't have gone much worse!
Chelsea have conceded eight goals, haven't won a game in ninety minutes and Diego Costa's hamstring is playing up again virtually ruling him out of this weekends Premier League opener against Swansea!
I cannot emphasise enough how disappointed I am. How on earth can we lose against New York Red Bull's reserve side and concede FOUR goals? We drew against PSG and Barcelona winning on penalties and then to not take TWO glorious chances against Arsenal yesterday, we lose the Community Shield and Jose Mourinho's unbeaten record against Wenger!
I understand people will think it's pre-season and results at this stage do not matter. However I beg to differ. You want to win games to get yourselves some real momentum as you start the league season. I just feel that we have been stop, start and that's not good enough for a squad of players that we have.
Chelsea are at their best moving the ball quickly and playing at pace. All this slow, laboured football doesn't suit us and allows the opposition to get set in their defensive positions. As Champions, we will need to expect that week in, week out and will have to find a way to break people down.
Diego Costa's hamstring complaint still concerns me and if I was the manager of the club, I would have tried to convince him to have an operation over the summer to repair whatever keeps flaring up every season. I know we have Falcao but Costa is and remains the main man. What happens if he goes again in the early part of the season, or any part of the season for that matter? We cannot afford to have him missing!
I just think if the manager is honest here, there is work to be done and defensively, he MUST be disappointed with the amount of goals and the type of goals we are conceding.
I sincerely hope we see a better performance on Wednesday against Fiorentina before we start our title defence against Swansea.
However, I stand by what I said, whatever happens on Wednesday, it's been a crappy pre-season for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea!
What do you think?
