Jose Mourinho has hinted that it's possible, so I am asking YOU the Chelsea fan reading this post if you think that Chelsea should play with two up front this season?
First here is what Jose Mourinho said. He was asked first of Falcao against Barcelona, then Loic Remy. He said:
“I like him a lot as a player. I think the team plays very well with a striker of his quality. He’s not a just guy who can score a goal, that is always a threat, he contributes a lot to the quality of the game.
Against Barcelona Falcao was in and certainly the team was direct, it was objective, he was holding the ball very well. The team was closing the lines and playing in the opposition half. I’m very happy with this first week.
Don’t forget Remy, I’m really happy with him. Against Barcelona in the last 20 minutes we played Remy and Falcao and they did very well. Not just to bring the team forward but with one less player in midfield to close the spaces and control the space in front. We are growing step by step and yes, we can play with two."
So before you think of your answer in your heads reading this, which hopefully you will make a comment on below, remember that if that happens, one of our midfield miss out which is more than likely going to be Oscar in the number ten role.
We would have a flat four in midfield of Fabregas and Matic with Hazard on the left, Willian on the right supporting Costa and Falcao for example. Does that not upset the balance of our team OR, does it make it stronger?
You have to also think about how many teams in the Premier League play a 4-4-2 formation. Not many of them do but to adopt the 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formations so by Chelsea playing with two up front, we could find ourselves outnumbered in midfield and not being able to dominate games as we do.
There ARE positives for playing with two strikers up front, especially with the quality of Costa and Falcao but I am not so sure.
What do you people think?
