According to one report in the press yesterday, Branislav Ivanovic is the first casualty of Chelsea's poor start to the season and will be dropped for the game at West Brom. Do you agree?
Branna has been immense for Chelsea for season after season but we have to put sentiment to one side, we have to look at the situation realistically, we have to be honest, We have to think of the team first and admit that he has been really poor overall!
We have hardly ever seen him lose the battle with his opponent like he did against Jefferson Montero against Swansea. Follow that up with a below par performance against Manchester City and as we know Jose Mourinho is not prepared to take any prisoners.
Ivanovic suffers with a real lack of pace now compared to some of the opponents he comes up against. He has never been the quickest but has got away with things using his strength and his body to ease players out of the way. Now, with the pace in our game getting quicker, he looks at times exposed.
So it looks like Baba Rahman will come straight into the side at left back with Cesar Azpilicueta reverting to right back, his natural position.
As I stated after the Manchester City game, for me the real concern was the holding midfield positions and that was the main cause of our problems in that first half. It wasn't so much our defence as they had been left exposed and isolated. However, we all agree that things need to be changed.
It's a shame but maybe a blessing in disguise for Ivanovic because let's face it, he has had everything his own way since nailing down the right back slot. It's about time he had some stiff competition for his place to make him focus and work harder to get it back.
If this report is true and Ivanovic is dropped for the weekend then I agree with the decision 100%. John Terry was made to be a scapegoat by the press after the game but I wasn't buying that for a second. It looks like Ivanovic is the first to suffer the consequences.
What do you feel about Ivanovic and his performances so far this season? If this report is true, is Jose Mourinho right to drop him?
