Many eyebrows were raised when it was confirmed that Jose Mourinho has signed Radamel Falcao on loan for the coming season. The boss believes that despite a poor season last term, at Chelsea he can re-discover his form.
Jose said:
“When a players is injured or has bad consequences of a big injury there is sometimes nothing you can do. We made ourselves sure that that was not the case with Falcao because if that was the case he would not be with us.
He didn’t perform for many reasons. Some players don’t perform with me, some players don’t perform with Chelsea, [but] they go to other clubs and they perform. This can happen.
So we know that Falcao is in good conditions related to the surgery he had before he went to Man United.
He didn’t perform for many reasons, it is not up to us to analyse it. We just think he can with us.
To replace a big player like Didier, we wanted to go with another big player with experience. Ready. So these three strikers for us: Falcao, Loic Remy and Diego Costa - we are very happy."
Plenty of people forget that Falcao had a major injury followed by surgery that kept him out of the World Cup. With that, you need time to recover, build your strength to regain fitness and regular games to get back into the swing of playing. I just felt that he never had the regular run of games to have that and we all saw what happened there.
Will he get that at Chelsea? That's to be seen and it will be interesting to see if Chelsea change their shape to accommodate both Costa and Falcao together up front.
One thing is for sure. Falcao was a class act and one of the most deadly strikers in the game. Form is temporary - class is permanent and if anyone can bring Falcao back to the heights he was at previously, it's Jose Mourinho.
