Jose Mourinho has already stoked the fires with our rivals ahead of the new Premier League season by stating that with the money they have already spent, they are all trying to buy the title! I am asking if you agree?
It's a statement that has been labelled at Chelsea ever since Roman Abramovich came in and took over the club in 2003. We have had everything thrown at us in that time but to me it doesn't and will never matter because I know where we have come from sitting in the Stadium as it used to be with 10,000 other fans in the old Second Division!
Fast forward thirty years and we find ourselves at the dawn of the new Premier League season. After Chelsea dominated the Premier League, setting a record for the most days at the top of the league in a single season, it's clear that our rivals needed to invest in their squads.
We have seen Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool all spend monies this summer with Chelsea being very quiet so far.
So to Jose Mourinho and his comments on our pre season tour of the USA. When asked of the spending by our rivals he said:
"In the beginning of Mr Abramovich coming to Chelsea, Chelsea was buying the title. Now, they are buying the title. All of them, they are buying the title.
It is up to us to be strong and to fight them and, obviously, to try and win it again, even without the big investments."
I personally believe it's tongue-in-cheek from the manager after years of abuse from when he was first at the club in 2004/5. If anything, it's the start of mind games from Mourinho as he is looking to put pressure on the likes of Pellegrini, Wenger, Van Gaal and Rodgers. It's almost a message to say that with the money you are spending, you need to be challenging for the title and it will be interesting to hear some responses from those managers.
It's all well and good spending the money, you need to build and maintain a team that works hard for you and for each other and that's not always easy to do. You can throw all the money in the world at your squad but it's never guaranteed that a foreign player who has never played here before will settle down quickly. Of course there are exceptions but for the most part that's the case.
The pressures of being successful and finishing inside the top four is so intense now, clubs cannot rest, they have to be pro-actively looking to improve their squads to reap the benefits of finishing as high as possible. The financial rewards are ridiculous! I guess our rivals have had to come to terms with that which is why they are spending what they have and will continue to do until the window closes.
It would be good to hear from rival supporters on this from Mourinho. What do you think of his claim that you are trying to buy the title and of the pressures of being successful with the financial rewards on offer?
