Jose Mourinho's post match comments the other night raised some questions in my mind. When asked of possible fragility within the current Chelsea squad he gave a response stating that he is more than happy with his squad of players. Do you agree with him?
He said:
“You are speaking with the manager of the best team in England - we don’t have fragilities.
We don’t have fragilities - we are a top team, we have top players.
We started training six days ago - we did 11 training sessions in six days.
We don’t need other players - we trust these players, these players are good."
There is little doubt that these players are good and that he trusts them, that is obvious but for some people like me, I believe we still need a left back after the sale of Filipe Luis.
Many people will state that our squad was plenty good enough last season and players such as Didier Drogba and Petr Cech have been replaced with Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic so we remain strong if not even stronger.
It's that left back position that we have issues. Jose Mourinho stated that Cesar Azpilicueta is the best left back in England to which many people will beg to differ but if he gets injured, Chelsea would be in a real difficult situation.
Branislav Ivanovic can play across there if required but to ask Kurt Zouma to step in as a right back to cover the position left by Ivanovic is not ideal.
The youngsters we had in and around the first team squad have been sold (Ryan Bertrand to Southampton and Patrick Van Aanholt to Sunderland) so we really need to invest in a quality signing and someone who is going to fight Azpilicueta for his position - not to come in and settle being a squad player.
Everywhere else in my opinion we are strong. With Victor Moses being given his chance at the club this season under Mourinho, we now have cover for Willian with Traore also available if required.
Ramires has put his injury problems behind him and he is available to fight for places in that deeper midfield role with Fabregas, Matic and Mikel.
There looks to be a nice blend this season within the squad and it will be interesting to see who steps up their game to make a real challenge for a regular first team spot. That's good for Chelsea because it keeps everyone on their toes!
What do you people think? Do you agree with Jose?
