As the Petr Cech to Arsenal deal rumbles on, I wanted to gather as much opinion from the Chelsea fans as possible on the comments made by John Terry recently; to see if you agree.
Speaking of a potential deal, Terry said:
"There’s talk of Arsenal signing Petr Cech and, if they do get him, he will strengthen them for sure. He will save them 12 or 15 points a season.
Petr was an unbelievable professional last year. When you get left out of the team it can be hard to accept but, when he came in [to the side], he was exceptional.
He deserves a lot of credit for that. We understand he wants to play first-team football but nobody wants to see him leave the club. He’s going to be sorely missed and will improve any side he goes to.”
So, considering JT believes that he could be worth as much as 12-15 points to Arsene Wengers side, does that now make them realistic title contenders? Personally, I am not so sure and I will explain why.
For any successful side (challenging for League Titles on a consistent basis that is..) you MUST have a strong spine and in addition to a strong back five. It's my opinion that Arsenal lack one centre back in addition to Cech to complete their back five with Per Mertersacker as the weak link but again, that's just my opinion.
They also lack an additional holding midfielder who isn't interested in pushing forward but to sit next to Coquelin to provide additional protection. Coquelin is outstanding but needs someone next to him and Santi Cazorla should be played further forward.
Look at Chelsea and the balance we have throughout the team - including our current back five! You will see a big difference. They play with confidence because they have that confidence in Courtois who will line up with them week in, week out and that makes a big, big difference!
Look at Matic in the holding role, he has been a revelation since his return to Chelsea and you would have noted that towards the business end of the season during some big, big games, Jose Mourinho played someone in a similar role next to him. Whether that was Kurt Zouma, Mikel or Ramires, the boss adopted that approach to ensure that first and foremost, Chelsea did not lose the game. Do Arsenal have that within themselves against their rivals - no they don't.
I personally think that Cech is a good signing for Arsenal but he doesn't turn them into contenders by himself, they still need more!
What do you people think?
