Chelsea are on the verge of sealing a move for Alex Song from Barcelona with Jon Mikel Obi leaving the club shortly. If you ask me that's a great move!
For years I have backed Mikel to the hilt in that deeper midfield role. I personally believe that the defensive side of his game is excellent. Maybe only when he is gone people will realise just how good he was for us over the years in a role that was virtually unsung back then.
However, we cannot deny that with the game evolving and Chelsea playing a different shape that demands the deeper midfield position to make use of the ball much more, Mikel struggles.
This is why I really like the signing of Alex Song which should be soon according to various reports. There is a reason why Barcelona come in for you; you have enough about you in that role to get a massive move such as that.
Unfortunately, he could never seem to oust Sergio Busquets for a sustained period of time and the loan move to West Ham came about last season.
We all remember Song from his Arsenal days. He was class in that role and his use of the ball was excellent. Remember the link up he developed with Van Persie and the goals that came about? In this current Chelsea set up I believe he would thrive.
It's never easy to see someone who has made such a contribution to our club leave but there is a time and a place and it seems that for Mikel that is now. If that means Alex Song comes in as a direct replacement then fantastic.
