Over recent days there have been reports that Jose Mourinho is about to sign a contract extension with Chelsea for an additional two seasons. What fantastic news that is for all of us!
Jose has openly admitted on numerous occasions that he will remain at the club until "Mr Abramovich" says so and it seems that the owner has made his intentions clear with the new deal.
There has been so much written about Mourinho and his departure from the club back in 2007. Plenty of people have had their say but it seems that it worked out for all of us in the end. Chelsea went onto win the League and Cup double under Carlo Ancelotti, the FA Cup under Guus Hiddink, we got to the Champions League final under Avram Grant and eventually won it under Roberto Di Matteo who, also guided us to another FA Cup victory.
As for Jose? Well as we know he went onto achieve a historic treble at Inter Milan and then onto Real Madrid where he won the Cup and La Liga beating the somewhat unbeatable Barcelona!
One thing during that period of time that seems as though has hit home to Roman Abramovich is the fact that finishing inside the top four of the Premier League is the most important every single season and Chelsea have been lucky enough to do that in virtually every season since he took over. The one blip of course was in the season we eventually won the Champions League despite finishing sixth in the Premier League, securing our path back into the competition as the holders.
There is so much money in the game now compared to ten years ago with the financial rewards for being successful literally blowing away previous seasons. Our game has turned into a results business and a team needs to be able to win ugly in addition to being at times fantastic.
The first time around you could blow your money without a care in the world similar to where you could at Vegas Casino Francais, on numerous expensive signings but now, if you add the restrictions of financial fair play to the situation a club has to face every season, it's clear that for a club like Chelsea with their restrictions at present of capacity of Stamford Bridge, we need to be competing for trophies and titles and there is only one man that virtually guarantees that for you every year - Jose Mourinho.
I personally do not care what the figures are that have been talked about and how much money the new extended contract is worth to the manager. For me and for all the Chelsea fans, it's the fact that we have a manager who delivers exactly what we all want and that's to be fighting for success. That's all we ask for and it seems after the succession of managers that have come in and out of the door at the club, Roman Abramovich finally realises what is needed.
It must have taken balls for Abramovich to admit that he was wrong to have let Mourinho go and to make that initial first contact. It's funny though isn't it because the chain of events that has followed has brought us back here, to where we are now - Champions.
It's obvious that the bond between the Manager and the Club in addition to the Manager and the Supporters is a special connection. As Jose admitted the other day, it was a risk to come back with the pressure of expectation to succeed. However, in saying that, the whole situation has changed this time around. He has time on his hands and a long term project that he is building here.
Just look at what the basis and foundations of our team built by Mourinho before his departure in 2007 went onto achieve. That's his target again with the added expectation to find the next John Terry and bring through some of our fantastic youngsters.
Our rivals surely would have felt dejected once they found out he was coming back two summers ago but to now find out that he will be here until at least 2019 must be even worse.
This news of a new extended contract is fantastic news for all of us. The new era at the club under the special one has started. Long may it continue!
