Fabio Coentrao is being linked with a summer move to Chelsea after finding life difficult at Real Madrid. For just £14m, I am asking whether or not you think he is worth signing?
Jose Mourinho originally signed the Portuguese left back from Benfica in 2011 for £25m but the left back has found it hard to break into the team on a regular basis ahead of the Brazilian Marcelo. Coentrao has featured just 17 times this season so far.
Most of you will think that we already have Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis at the club and that we do not need another full back. However, as we have seen the Brazilian has struggled to get into our first team and force Azpilicueta out of the side. As a result, Luis has been linked with a possible return to Atletico Madrid despite denying any thoughts of that happening.
It's obvious that we all thought that Luis would have much more of an impact at the club and that he would be able to provide real, direct competition to Azpilicueta. That simply hasn't happened for one reason or another and when people analyse Chelsea and the areas we could improve, that left back position will be one of those areas.
My own personal opinion is that whoever Chelsea are linked with should be someone that can provide realistic and healthy competition for places within the squad. Someone who could come in and give someone currently in that position a fight to work hard to keep their place in the side.
Coentrao at present doesn't do that for me just as Filipe Luis has not this season so I personally believe that we should look elsewhere.
Coentrao isn't the only left back Chelsea have been linked with in recent weeks. Another is Aaron Cresswell of West Ham and I have had my say on him too!
I am not 100% convinced that Filipe Luis will leave Chelsea in the summer. I guess it's dependant on what happens with Branislav Ivanovic as he is consistently being linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
If Ivanovic is sold, you could see Cesar Azpilicueta move across to the right hand side to give Luis a chance down the left. If he isn't sold, then it should be the same back five again next season.
What do you think about the link with Coentrao and the situation with our left back position generally? Would you sell Luis and bring someone else in?
