Chelsea sit seven points clear of Arsenal, eight points clear of Manchester United and nine points clear of Manchester City, still with a game in hand, as we head into our final eight games of the season.
As we move into the business end of the season, Jose Mourinho has challenged his players as they face the moment of truth in their quest for the first Premier League title in five seasons.
Speaking after the Stoke game and before Manchester City lost to Crystal Palace last night which virtually put an end to their title hopes, Mourinho said:
Of course we cannot forget that we have Arsenal and Manchester United to face in the next three weeks so the title race is far from over, but I believe we are well equipped to get the job done, hopefully sooner rather than later."Mentality is important because now is the moment where everything is decided for everything - for relegation, the Champions League places and the title. You can do amazingly well for seven, eight, nine months but the moment of truth always arrives and the moment of truth for us is get the wins we need to be champions. So to be mentally strong, but at the same time be comfortable with the situation, is very important.I think people are comfortable. I look at them (the players) and see people who are comfortable and relaxed to play these last two months.I always think experience is a positive thing in life and in particularly football. For them (Terry, Drogba, Petr Cech, Ivanovic, John Obi Mikel) it is deja vu.For the others it is a new emotion for them. But it is a good new experience for them. To fight for the title is the best motivation you can have in the game."
This Chelsea side has lost only twice in the Premier League this season so far. Unless there is a massive change in our fortunes and our season literally falls apart, you cannot see Chelsea letting the lead they have had at the top of the League from day one slip away.
Jose Mourinho is right to warn his players of the challenges they will face in the next two months. I firmly believe as he does, that Chelsea will be right up for the fight to bring the FOURTH Premier League title to Stamford Bridge!
